policies as targeted and precise. but during this attack on gaza–and previous aults–a consensus among human rights groups has emerged: israel is committing war crimes in strikes that are wiping out civilians. since the start of israel’s “operation protective edge,” human rights watch,amnesty international and united nations officials–the heavyweights when it comes to interpreting international law–have all issued reports and statements slamming israel for violations of international law. those organizations have also said hamas and other palestinian militant groups firing rockets are committing war crimes since their volleys are indiscriminately aimed at israeli civilians. israeli spokespeople have pointed to a number of military policies they say arealigned with international law to deflect criticism from the growing civilian death toll in gaza, which is at 164, according to the un. one policy frequently cited is the so-called “knock on the roof,” when israel launches a less-lethal projectile to warn the inhabitants of a home in gaza that they are about to be attacked with munitions. another policy israel says is justified is attacks on the homes of palestinian reporting isn’t done behind a desk, but out there in the world, meeting people face to face. i was particularly interested in the middle east as i felt its image was often unfairly portrayed in the media, which tends to focus on the negative aspects of the region: the terrorism, the authoritarianism, the religious conservatism. and this is only getting worse, with the rise of trump and far-right parties in europe. so i decided i needed to get out there and see the place for myself. plus, i just wanted a whopping great adventure before i got too old and tied down with home and family commitments.
how has travelling influenced your life? do you think you live better because of it? travelling has had a huge influence on my life. over the years, i’ve learnt many valuable things that have impacted me and the way i view the world. i’ve learnt that the vast majority of people are decent and kind, and the rogues are a tiny, unfortunate minority. i’ve learnt that most people live tough, impoverished lives, and i must never take my privilege for granted. i’ve learnt that people are far more likely to trust and help you if you treat them with respect. most importantly, i’ve learnt that the world is far less frightening than the newspapers might have us believe, because they only dwell on the worst things that happen and give us a skewed sense of reality.   why a bicycle? what is the difference between that and other modes of travelling? on a bike you don’t just observe your surroundings, but become a part of them. everyone wants to talk to you, so it’s a fantastic way to get to know people and communities. it’s also a brilliant way to get fit, and you can justifiably eat three times as much as you usually do – which was heaven for a glutton like me in turkey and iran, as i am obsessed with kebabs and could easily spend my entire life eating nothing else.   how is travelling as a woman? how is it specifically in iran? travelling as a woman has pros and cons, but for me the pros seemed greater. as a female cyc , everyone wants to look after you: the women out of a sense of maternal comp ion, the men out of chivalric duty. there were of course men who helped me for some ulterior motives – but in my mind, it was their problem if they expected something in return, not mine. aggressive men who actively wish you harm are extremely rare, in my experience (and the experience of every female solo traveller i have met); most pests are simply opportunistic and ignorant. i met several men like this in iran, but i never felt in danger from them, and the majority of men were considerate and respectful. i suspect, however, that i may have faced more problems if i was an iranian woman rather than a foreigner.  why did you decide to travel to iran? what was your image of the country? i have long been fascinated by iran, mainly due to its reputation in the west as a fanatically islamist country and the very different reality on the ground. when i arrived, it was clear that there was a big division between the regime and the majority of the population, and people were less religious than i was expecting. i wasn’t too anxious about my safety, as i iranians are renowned for their warmth and hospitality towards visitors, though i was definitely worried about being judged by men and more conservative communities. my biggest concern, however, was being arrested, as there are many stories of foreign journa s being detained or deported. in the end, however, none of these concerns bore fruit. i never felt any jud ent from anyone, and instead they seemed fascinated by my journey and my life in the uk. the police were surprisingly friendly too and i was only stopped on a handful of occasions. on the negative side, one thing i noticed was how much everyone hated the arabs, who they seemed to resent for invading persia in the 7th century, as well as for the 1980 iraq war. this seemed a bit tough to me, as surely all 400 million arabs shouldn’t be tarred with this brush? i was also intrigued by how suspicious most people seemed to be of the british government – though, considering our history, i can understand where this attitude e from!   what did you do during your visit? what did you like most and what least? i cycled from bandar abbas to tehran, via shiraz, persepolis, yazd, isfahan, kashan and qom. the mosques and palaces in both shiraz and isfahan were breathtakingly beautiful, and i also loved the quiet calm of yazd and the ancient zoroastrian shrine of chak chak. for me, the best thing was the incredible hospitality of the people, however, who used to stop their cars at the side of the road just to give me food and water. the things i liked the least were the terrible desert heat (never cycle through iran in the summer!), the traffic in big cities and – most of all – the oppressive laws against women that dictated our clothes and behaviour.   what are your general observations about iran? it’s a beautiful, civilised, highly developed country full of warm, welcoming, educated people. however, society did seem to be very divided between progressive and conservative factions, with almost no interaction between the two, so my impression was that it may take a long time before there’s real reform. the very large number of young people perhaps gives hope for the future.   what is your message to women in iran? i met many strong, independent women in iran who i’m sure need no advice from me on how to stand up for themselves. so i simply say: keep fighting, keep struggling, keep pushing the boundaries, keep knowing your value and strength. iran – like many places in the world – is a deeply patriarchal culture, where men have had the power for centuries. the culture needs to change, along with the law, and men need to stop viewing women as second-cl citizens. so i have a message to men too: stop objectifying and demeaning women. stop mollycoddling them and telling them they need your protection. they don’t. they are your equals, and need freedom, dignity and respect.   what are your recommendations to other travellers to iran?
