themesinnocence
the boys in “the destructors” are in their teen, which is the age at which childish innocence is gradually left behind in favor of worldliness and sophistication. for the boys in the story, however, their innocence is already gone, replaced by cynicism, selfishness, and rebelliousness. when mr. thomas arrives home early, t. is surprised because the old man had told him he would be gone longer. greene writes, “he protested with the fury of the child he had never been.” not only have these boys grown up during the war years, they live in an environment that serves as a constant reminder of that harrowing experience. they meet in a parking lot near an area that was destroyed by bombs during the war, and they are seemingly unaffected by it because it is such a normal part of their life. in reality, the war years have claimed their youthful innocence, leaving them disillusioned and determined to create their own world order, but all they really know is destruction. part of innocence is surrender to the imagination. in “the destructors,” however, imagination takes an ugly turn. t. uses his imagination to devise the plan to destroy mr. thomas’s house. greene writes that the boys “worked with the seriousness of creators – and destruction after all is a form of creation. a kind of imagination had seen this house as it had now become.” the imagination used to plot the demise of the house is the opposite of the imagination used to create it. in innocence, a person’s imagination is applied to think of a better world, but the boys have lost their innocence. they can only imagine a worse world. power
“the destructors” is a study of shifting power. blackie initially holds the power of leadership in the gang, and he is a basically good leader. although he encourages mischief, it is the kind that does not hurt anyone. in his hands, power is the ability to lead others. when t. takes over leadership, however, the gang changes dramatically. he gets the members to participate in a cruel plan to destroy an innocent man’s home, a home that is a treasured piece of england’s past. in t.’s hands, power is the ability to destroy. his brand of leadership is different; when blackie arrives on the first morning of the destruction (the day after t. umes leadership), “he had at once the impression of organization, very different from the old happy-go-lucky ways under his leadership.” when summers arrives on the second morning, voicing his preference to do something more fun that day, t. will not hear of it. t. knows he is more powerful than summers is, so he reminds him that the job is not done and that summers himself voted in favor of the project. he succeeds in pressuring the boy to stay and help finish the destruction. in the changing social structure of this small community, the balance of power is shifting. the boys forcibly take power in the community, and it is executable power. they have the ability to make changes in people’s lives and to intimidate others. mr. thomas, on the other hand, thinks he has power that he no longer possesses. he believes that he has authority based on the social order of the past, in which he, as an elder in the community, would be respected and obeyed. the shift in power seen in “the destructors” signals the changing social order and does not bode well for the future. styleparadox
greene demonstrates the instability of postwar england in his presentation of opposing forces throughout “the destructors.” the tension created by these forces reflects a society that has survived trauma but is deeply changed by it. social dynamics are undergoing change, and the youth no longer feel connected to the past, as previous generations did. greene’s writing often incorporates paradoxes, and in this story, paradoxes are used to communicate the atmosphere of the community in which the wormsley common gang functions. greene’s use of paradox in the story is evident in t.’s attitudes toward mr. thomas. on the one hand, he sets about destroying his house, treating him disrespectfully, and regarding him with suspicion. at the same time, however, t. does not hate him. his intention to destroy mr. thomas’s life is not personal but is rooted in his desire to get rid of the last vestige of traditional beauty in the war-torn landscape. although his destructive behavior is not personal, the consequences are deeply personal for the old man, but t. is unable to consider such consequences. a related paradox in the story is when t. takes mr. thomas’s seventy one-pound notes, but not for personal gain. instead, he takes them only to burn them. in other words, t. takes items that are inherently valuable, but he has no interest in making use of that value. t.’s attitude toward mr. thomas’s house is paradoxical, too. he knows the house is beautiful, but his feelings about beauty, especially as they relate to social cl es (the house is an emblem of the upper cl ) makes it easy for him to destroy it anyway. another example of paradox is in the truck driver who ultimately brings the house to its final destruction. while the reader expects this man to react with feelings of guilt or horror, he laughs. he has no part in planning the destruction, nor does he have any feelings toward the old man or what he represents; yet, his reaction is not what is expected. he lacks sympathy or comp ion and bursts into uncontrolled laughter, saying, “you got to admit it’s funny.” allegory
beneath the surface of “the destructors” are allegorical elements that enable greene to comment about postwar england. the various characters in the story represent the older generation and the traditions of the past and the younger generation and its rejection of the empty promises and values of the past. mr. thomas stands for the old ways and the past belief in the authority of elders. he initially expects to be able to tell the boys what to do and what not to do simply because he is older than they are. in the determination to destroy mr. thomas’s house, the work of a respected english architect, greene demonstrates that the longstanding cl struggle, as represented by property, is intensified. the lower cl , represented by the gang, is not isfied to watch the upper cl enjoy valuable property; instead, they succeed in destroying it and somehow achieve a closer balance between the haves and the have-nots. the story is also an allegory about power. t. joins the group and soon takes the power away from blackie. once he has secured the power in the group, he immediately initiates changes by raising the stakes of what kind of mischief they will seek. t. becomes a sort of dictator in the group, giving orders and making unilateral decisions. in the wake of world war ii, these are disturbing images of a new generation of power-hungry young people emerging from the wartime experience. readers may interpret this as a message about the price of war or as a warning of what may come if something is not done to reverse current trends.

critical overview“the destructors” works as both parable and allegory, parable in the sense that it is a narrative in a relatively contemporaneous setting that makes a clear moral point, allegorical in the sense that it ‘signifies’ on several levels. critics often comment on the story within the historical context of the postwar era in england. miller observes that the story reflects conditions in england in the postwar years when the gradual recovery ushered in unexpected shifts in social and political dynamics. many communities (like the one in the story) lay in ruins. anarchism is central to ‘the destructors,’ for the story’s thesis. on the other hand, jesse f. mccartney of southern humanities review sees the gang as symbolizing democratic socialism struggling against privilege and conservative politics. other critics are quick to note that the story resonates with today’s audience because what is disturbing in the story continues to be part of daily life.

i would like to talk to you about islam, particularly the image that is presented to you as islam. many attempts have been made over the past two decades, almost since the disintegration of the soviet union, to place this great religion in the seat of a horrifying enemy. the provocation of a feeling of horror and hatred and its utilization has unfortunately a long record in the political history of the west.

here, i don’t want to deal with the different phobias with which the western nations have thus far been indoctrinated. a cursory review of recent critical studies of history would bring home to you the fact that the western governments’ insincere and hypocritical treatment of other nations and cultures has been censured in new historiog hies.

the histories of the united states and europe are ashamed of slavery, embarr ed by the colonial period and chagrined at the oppression of people of color and non-christians. your researchers and historians are deeply ashamed of the bloodsheds wrought in the name of religion between the catholics and protestants or in the name of nationality and ethnicity during the first and second world wars. this approach is admirable.

by mentioning a fraction of this long , i don’t want to reproach history; rather i would like you to ask your intellectuals as to why the public conscience in the west awakens and comes to its senses after a delay of several decades or centuries. why should the revision of collective conscience apply to the distant past and not to the current problems? why is it that attempts are made to prevent public awareness regarding an important issue such as the treatment of islamic culture and thought?

you know well that humiliation and spreading hatred and illusionary fear of the “other” have been the common base of all those oppressive profiteers. now, i would like you to ask yourself why the old policy of spreading “phobia” and hatred has targeted islam and muslims with an unprecedented intensity. why does the power structure in the world want islamic thought to be marginalized and remain latent? what concepts and values in islam disturb the programs of the super powers and what interests are safeguarded in the shadow of distorting the image of islam? hence, my first request is: study and research the incentives behind this widespread tarnishing of the image of islam. my second request is that in reaction to the flood of prejudgments and disinformation paigns, try to gain a direct and firsthand knowledge of this religion. the right logic requires that you understand the nature and essence of what they are frightening you about and want you to keep away from.

i don’t insist that you accept my reading or any other reading of islam. what i want to say is: don’t allow this dynamic and effective reality in today’s world to be introduced to you through resentments and prejudices. don’t allow them to hypocritically introduce their own recruited terrorists as representatives of islam.

receive knowledge of islam from its primary and original sources. gain information about islam through the qur’an and the life of its great prophet. i would like to ask you whether you have directly read the qur’an of the muslims. have you studied the teachings of the prophet of islam and his humane, ethical doctrines? have you ever received the message of islam from any sources other than the media?

have you ever asked yourself how and on the basis of which values has islam established the greatest scientific and intellectual civilization of the world and raised the most distinguished scientists and intellectuals throughout several centuries?

i would like you not to allow the derogatory and offensive image-buildings to create an emotional gulf between you and the reality, taking away the possibility of an impartial judgment from you. today, the communication media have removed the geog hical borders. hence, don’t allow them to besiege you within fabricated and mental borders.

although no one can individually fill the created gaps, each one of you can construct a bridge of thought and fairness over the gaps to illuminate yourself and your surrounding environment. while this preplanned challenge between islam and you, the youth, is undesirable, it can raise new questions in your curious and inquiring minds. attempts to find answers to these questions will provide you with an appropriate opportunity to discover new truths.

therefore, don’t miss the opportunity to gain proper, correct and unbiased understanding of islam so that hopefully, due to your sense of responsibility toward the truth, future generations would write the history of this current interaction between islam and the west with a clearer conscience and lesser resentment.

this letter is from yarsan democratic organization:
yari is a kurdish religion and have its origin from kurdistan. the idea behind the emergence of yari religion has existed long before lightheaded soltan sahak, around 800s, founded and declared religion as it is currently. yarsanis are followers of yari religion. the yari religion was founded and established by sultan sehak and his companions based on a pact known as pirrdìwerì pact (biawbes pirrdìwerì) in hewraman of kermanshahan in around 13th century a.d. regardless of religious belonging, yarsanis have cultural and social relationships with their neighbours’, in which they have managed to preserve their characteristics in different fields of the society in a peaceful coexisting. linguistic similarities in form of dialect and common history and culture have played an essential role in strengthening these relationships.
on the basis of the writings in yari claimed that balule (one religious leader’s) was the first worked to revive the ancient iranian belief. in the period 800-900 century a.d. collected and he organized people around yari’s faith.
yari is not an esoteric religion. soltan sahak declares yari religion perdiwer and alleges that yari religion differs greatly from the semitic religions and has its own doctrine and practice. those who believe in the doctrine and practice become a yari (supporter of yari religion).
yari is a minority religion in iran not even recognized by the theocratic regime. and according to the islamic constitution in iran, parag h 12 and 13 belonging to yari considered blasphemy and punishable by death. the audience of this religion is a vulnerable group for continuous oppression and risk not least total imilation as a result of the regime’s political program.
after a member of yarsan community with yari faith were arrested and received his shaved moustache forcibly, appeared other two with the same faith in front of the house hamadan province and set fire to himself in protest against the regime’s action. recently died a yarsani soldier because of lack of access to medicines when he repeatedly requested medical istance and monitoring.
the yarsanians people have suffered injustice and discrimination during the regime 37 years board. although yari religion is not awarded rights as a minority religion on an equal footing with other minorities in accordance parag h 13 first chapter in the constitution, but this action is in the opposite contravention of parag hs 19.23 in chapter 3 (nation rights). the action of the regime against the yarsani community are violations of articles 1,3,5,7,9 and 18 in particular human rights which iran has signed and is committed to maintaining it.
yarsan society is a society that has intensively experienced all kinds of injustice.
their history includes continues struggle for protecting their identity and existence. religious oppression in addition to ethnic discrimination, social and economical injustice and
deprivation of civil rights and common social benefits have resulted in individual defeat and disappointment, which consequently damages and paralyses the entire yarsan society. at present, yarsani inhabited areas are among the most deprived areas in iranian kurdistan. in the absence of freedom of civic enga ent and lack of means for promoting scientific researches on history and philosophy of yari religion, yarsans identity and existence are seriously threatened. what most people know about the yari religion today is some incorrect and contradicting knowledge, which doesn’t meet the needs of this society. such a development will only devastate this precious and national heritage, which has own philosophical, historical, native and cultural characteristics.
the revolution of 1357 (1979) followed by changes in terms of political structure and establishment of religious role in iran, turned into serious political and social disturbances and instability. the political anarchy and power struggle lead to insecurity in the society. the result of this political and social transition not only made the life difficult for political parties and organizations with different opinions, but also other social and cultural minorities suffered deeply, in particular the follower of yari religion.
the conflicting principles of yari religion with the iranian islamic regime have subjected the yarsan minority to persecution and discrimination in iran. the islamic regime is continuing its suppressive policy against yarsan, as a religious minority.
consequentially, this situation forced many people to leave the country and seek protection in other countries.
yarsan community was among those religious minorities that suffered a great deal and be e a victim in this political transformation. currently, thousands of them are spread across europe and other parts of the world. the severe condition of yarsan community in iran on one hand, and presumed political changes in the country on the other hand has encouraged yarsanis in exile to organize. accordingly in this way try to mobilize and establish a united front in order to initiate a struggle for demanding justice for yarsanis, and prepare for the possible political changes in the future.
we urge and hope that you have more focus on violations of our human rights committed by the islamic regime in iran. we appreciate and ask you to establish a close contact with activists, politicians and intellectuals of yarsan society, both in country and abroad. in the way you will be able to see and analyse our situation from different perspectives, namely how we have it as a group.

in the name of god, the beneficent the merciful to the youth in europe and north america, the recent events in france and similar ones in some other western countries have convinced me to directly talk to you about them. i am addressing you, [the youth], not because i overlook your parents, rather it is because the future of your nations and countries will be in your hands; and also i find that the sense of quest for truth is more vigorous and attentive in your hearts. i don’t address your politicians and statesmen either in this writing because i believe that they have consciously separated the route of politics from the path of righteousness and truth. i would like to talk to you about islam, particularly the image that is presented to you as islam. many attempts have been made over the past two decades, almost since the disintegration of the soviet union, to place this great religion in the seat of a horrifying enemy. the provocation of a feeling of horror and hatred and its utilization has unfortunately a long record in the political history of the west. here, i don’t want to deal with the different phobias with which the western nations have thus far been indoctrinated. a cursory review of recent critical studies of history would bring home to you the fact that the western governments’ insincere and hypocritical treatment of other nations and cultures has been censured in new historiog hies. the histories of the united states and europe are ashamed of slavery, embarr ed by the colonial period and chagrined at the oppression of people of color and non-christians. your researchers and historians are deeply ashamed of the bloodsheds wrought in the name of religion between the catholics and protestants or in the name of nationality and ethnicity during the first and second world wars. this approach is admirable. by mentioning a fraction of this long , i don’t want to reproach history; rather i would like you to ask your intellectuals as to why the public conscience in the west awakens and comes to its senses after a delay of several decades or centuries. why should the revision of collective conscience apply to the distant past and not to the current problems? why is it that attempts are made to prevent public awareness regarding an important issue such as the treatment of islamic culture and thought? you know well that humiliation and spreading hatred and illusionary fear of the “other” have been the common base of all those oppressive profiteers. now, i would like you to ask yourself why the old policy of spreading “phobia” and hatred has targeted islam and muslims with an unprecedented intensity. why does the power structure in the world want islamic thought to be marginalized and remain latent? what concepts and values in islam disturb the programs of the super powers and what interests are safeguarded in the shadow of distorting the image of islam? hence, my first request is: study and research the incentives behind this widespread tarnishing of the image of islam. my second request is that in reaction to the flood of prejudgments and disinformation paigns, try to gain a direct and firsthand knowledge of this religion. the right logic requires that you understand the nature and essence of what they are frightening you about and want you to keep away from. i don’t insist that you accept my reading or any other reading of islam. what i want to say is: don’t allow this dynamic and effective reality in today’s world to be introduced to you through resentments and prejudices. don’t allow them to hypocritically introduce their own recruited terrorists as representatives of islam. receive knowledge of islam from its primary and original sources. gain information about islam through the qur’an and the life of its great prophet. i would like to ask you whether you have directly read the qur’an of the muslims. have you studied the teachings of the prophet of islam and his humane, ethical doctrines? have you ever received the message of islam from any sources other than the media? have you ever asked yourself how and on the basis of which values has islam established the greatest scientific and intellectual civilization of the world and raised the most distinguished scientists and intellectuals throughout several centuries? i would like you not to allow the derogatory and offensive image-buildings to create an emotional gulf between you and the reality, taking away the possibility of an impartial judgment from you. today, the communication media have removed the geog hical borders. hence, don’t allow them to besiege you within fabricated and mental borders. although no one can individually fill the created gaps, each one of you can construct a bridge of thought and fairness over the gaps to illuminate yourself and your surrounding environment. while this preplanned challenge between islam and you, the youth, is undesirable, it can raise new questions in your curious and inquiring minds. attempts to find answers to these questions will provide you with an appropriate opportunity to discover new truths. therefore, don’t miss the opportunity to gain proper, correct and unbiased understanding of islam so that hopefully, due to your sense of responsibility toward the truth, future generations would write the history of this current interaction between islam and the west with a clearer conscience and lesser resentment. seyyed ali khamenei

to the youth in europe and north america,

the recent events in france and similar ones in some other western countries have convinced me to directly talk to you about them. i am addressing you, [the youth], not because i overlook your parents, rather it is because the future of your nations and countries will be in your hands; and also i find that the sense of quest for t. launched in 2013, the national brain initiative aims to revolutionize our understanding of cognition by mapping the activity of every neuron in the human brain, revealing how brain circuits interact to create memories, learn new skills, and interpret the world around us.before that can happen, neuroscientists need new tools that will let them probe the brain more deeply and in greater detail, says alan jasanoff, an mit ociate professor of biological engineering. “there’s a general recognition that in order to understand the brain’s processes in comprehensive detail, we need ways to monitor neural function deep in the brain with spatial, temporal, and functional precision,” he says.jasanoff and colleagues have now taken a step toward that goal: they have established a technique that allows them to track neural communication in the brain over time, using magnetic resonance imaging (mri) along with a specialized molecular sensor. this is the first time anyone has been able to map neural signals with high precision over large brain regions in living animals, offering a new window on brain function, says jasanoff, who is also an ociate member of mit’s mcgovern institute for brain research.his team used this molecular imaging approach, described in the may 1 online edition ofscience, to study the neurotransmitter dopamine in a region called the ventral striatum, which is involved in motivation, reward, and reinforcement of behavior. in future studies, jasanoff plans to combine dopamine imaging with functional mri techniques that measure overall brain activity to gain a better understanding of how dopamine levels influence neural circuitry.“we want to be able to relate dopamine signaling to other neural processes that are going on,” jasanoff says. “we can look at different types of stimuli and try to understand what dopamine is doing in different brain regions and relate it to other measures of brain function.”tracking dopaminedopamine is one of many neurotransmitters that help neurons to communicate with each other over short distances. much of the brain’s dopamine is produced by a structure called the ventral tegmental area (vta). this dopamine travels through the mesolimbic pathway to the ventral striatum, where it combines with sensory information from other parts of the brain to reinforce behavior and help the brain learn new tasks and motor functions. this circuit also plays a major role in addiction.to track dopamine’s role in neural communication, the researchers used an mri sensor they had previously designed, consisting of an iron-containing protein that acts as a weak magnet. when the sensor binds to dopamine, its magnetic interactions with the surrounding tissue weaken, which dims the tissue’s mri signal. this allows the researchers to see where in the brain dopamine is being released. the researchers also developed an algorithm that lets them calculate the precise amount of dopamine present in each fraction of a cubic millimeter of the ventral striatum.after delivering the mri sensor to the ventral striatum of rats, jasanoff’s team electrically stimulated the mesolimbic pathway and was able to detect exactly where in the ventral striatum dopamine was released. an area known as the nucleus accumbens core, known to be one of the main targets of dopamine from the vta, showed the highest levels. the researchers also saw that some dopamine is released in neighboring regions such as the ventral pallidum, which regulates motivation and emotions, and parts of the thalamus, which relays sensory and motor signals in the brain.each dopamine stimulation lasted for 16 seconds and the researchers took an mri image every eight seconds, allowing them to track how dopamine levels changed as the neurotransmitter was released from cells and then disappeared. “we could divide up the map into different regions of interest and determine dynamics separately for each of those regions,” jasanoff says.he and his colleagues plan to build on this work by expanding their studies to other parts of the brain, including the areas most affected by parkinson’s disease, which is caused by the death of dopamine-generating cells. jasanoff’s lab is also working on sensors to track other neurotransmitters, allowing them to study interactions between neurotransmitters during different tasks.the paper’s lead author is postdoc taekwan lee. technical istant lili cai and postdocs victor lelyveld and aviad hai also contributed to the research, which was funded by the national institutes of health and the defense a nced research projects agency.
گرانترین پرنده ها در سراسر دنیا + ع the bird and the cage by paulo coelho once upon a time, there was a bird. he was adorned with perfect wings and with glossy, colorful feathers. he was a creature made to fly about freely in the sky, bringing joy to everyone who saw him. روزی روزگاری پرنده ای بود با یک جفت بال زیبا و پرهای درخشان رنگارنگ و عالی و در یک کلام حیوانی مستقل و آماده ی پرواز در کامل . هر آن را در حین پرواز می دید خوشحال میشد one day, a woman saw this bird and fell in love with him. she watched his flight, her mouth wide in amazement, her heart pounding, her eyes shining with excitement. she invited the bird to fly with her, and the two traveled across the sky in perfect harmony. she admired and venerated and celebrated that bird. زن پرنده را تحسین می کرد ، ارج می نهاد و می پرستید ... but then she thought: he might want to visit far-off mountains! and she was afraid that she would never feel the same way about the other bird. and she felt envy, envy for the bird's ability to fly. حسادت به توانایی پرنده در پرواز . and she felt alone. و احساس تنهایی کرد and her thought: "i'm going top set a t . the next time the bird appears, he will never leave again." . شید : « برایش تله می گذارم . این بار که پرنده بیاید دیگر اجازه نمی دهم برود . the bird, who was also in love, returned the following day, fell into the t and was put in a cage. پرنده هم که عاشق شده بود روز بعد بازگشت و به دام افتاد و در قفس زندانی شد she looked at the bird every day. there he was, the object of her p ion, and she showed him to her friends, who said: "now you have everything you could possibly want." زن هر روز به پرنده می نگریست ، همه ی هیجاناتش در آن قفس بود آن را به دوستانش نشان میداد و آنها به او می گفتند: « تو همه چیز داری. however, a strange transformation began to take place; now that she had the bird and no longer needed to woo him, she began to lose interest. ناگهان دگرگونی غریبی به وقوع پیوست . پرنده کاملا در اختیار زن بود و دیگر انگیزه ای برای تصرفش وجود نداشت . بنابراین علاقه او به حیوان به تدریج از بین رفت. the bird, unable to fly and express the true meaning of his life, began to waste away and his feathers began to lose their gloss; he grew ugly; and the woman no longer paid any attention, except by feeding him and cleaning out his cage. پرنده نیز بدون پرواز زندگی بیهوده ای را می گذراند و در نتیجه به تدریج تحلیل رفت . درخشش پرهایش محو شد ، به زشتی گرایید و دیگر جز موقع غذا دادن و تمیز قفس ی به او توجهی نمی کرد. one day, the bird died. the woman felt terribly sad and spent all her time thinking about him. but she did not remember the cage, she thought only of the day when she had seen him for the first time, flying contently amongst the clouds. سرانجام روزی پرنده مرد . زن دچار اندوهی فراوان شد و همواره به آن حیوان می شید . ولی هرگز قفس را به یاد نمی آورد . تنها روزی در خاطرش مانده بود که برای نخستین باز پرنده را خوشحال در میان ابرها در حال پرواز دیده بود . if she had looked more deeply into herself, she would have realized that what had trilled her about the bird was his freedom, the energy of his wings in motion, not his physical body. اگر زن اندکی دقت می کرد به خوبی متوجه می شد آنچه او را به پرنده دلبسته کرد و برایش هیجان به ارمغان آورد ، آن حیوان و انرژی بال هایش در حال حرکت بود ، نه جسم نش . without the bird, her life too lost all meaning, and death e knocking at her door. "why have you come?" she asked death. "so that you can fly once more with him across the sky," death replied. "if you had allowed him to come and go, you would have loved and admired him even more; alas, you now need me in order to find him again." اگر اجازه می دادی پرنده به برود و بازگردد هنوز هم می توانستی به تحسین و عشق ورزیدن ادامه بدهی . حالا برای پیدا و ملاقات با آن پرنده به من نیاز داری ... پائولو کوئیلو http://s5.picofile.com/file/8165801100/letter4u_b75awfqciaag0o0_jpg_large.jpg in the name of god, the beneficent the merciful to the youth in europe and north america, the recent events in france and similar ones in some other western countries have convinced me to directly talk to you about them. i am addressing you, [the youth], not because i overlook your parents, rather it is because the future of your nations and countries will be in your hands; and also i find that the sense of quest for truth is more vigorous and attentive in your hearts. i don’t address your politicians and statesmen either in this writing because i believe that they have consciously separated the route of politics from the path of righteousness and truth. i would like to talk to you about islam, particularly the image that is presented to you as islam. many attempts have been made over the past two decades, almost since the disintegration of the soviet union, to place this great religion in the seat of a horrifying enemy. the provocation of a feeling of horror and hatred and its utilization has unfortunately a long record in the political history of the west. here, i don’t want to deal with the different phobias with which the western nations have thus far been indoctrinated. a cursory review of recent critical studies of history would bring home to you the fact that the western governments’ insincere and hypocritical treatment of other nations and cultures has been censured in new historiog hies. the histories of the united states and europe are ashamed of slavery, embarr ed by the colonial period and chagrined at the oppression of people of color and non-christians. your researchers and historians are deeply ashamed of the bloodsheds wrought in the name of religion between the catholics and protestants or in the name of nationality and ethnicity during the first and second world wars. this approach is admirable. by mentioning a fraction of this long , i don’t want to reproach history; rather i would like you to ask your intellectuals as to why the public conscience in the west awakens and comes to its senses after a delay of several decades or centuries. why should the revision of collective conscience apply to the distant past and not to the current problems? the histories of the united states and europe are ashamed of slavery, embarr ed by the colonial period and chagrined at the oppression of people of color and non-christians. your researchers and historians are deeply ashamed of the bloodsheds wrought in the name of religion between the catholics and protestants or in the name of nationality and ethnicity during the first and second world wars. this approach is admirable.

by mentioning a fraction of this long , i don’t want to reproach history; rather i would like you to ask your intellectuals as to why the public conscience in the west awakens and comes to its senses after a delay of several decades or centuries. why should the revision of collective conscience apply to the distant past and not to the current problems? why is it that attempts are made to prevent public awareness regarding an important issue such as the treatment of islamic culture and thought?

you know well that humiliation and spreading hatred and illusionary fear of the “other” have been the common base of all those oppressive profiteers. now, i would like you to ask yourself why the old policy of spreading “phobia” and hatred has targeted islam and muslims with an unprecedented intensity. why does the power structure in the world want islamic thought to be marginalized and remain latent? what concepts and values in islam disturb the programs of the super powers and what interests are safeguarded in the shadow of distorting the image of islam? hence, my first request is: study and research the incentives behind this widespread tarnishing of the image of islam.

my second request is that in reaction to the flood of prejudgments and disinformation paigns, try to gain a direct and firsthand knowledge of this religion. the right logic requires that you understand the nature and essence of what they are frightening you about and want you to keep away from.

i don’t insist that you accept my reading or any other reading of islam. what i want to say is: don’t allow this dynamic and effective reality in today’s world to be introduced to you through resentments and prejudices. don’t allow them to hypocritically introduce their own recruited terrorists as representatives of islam.

receive knowledge of islam from its primary and original sources. gain information about islam through the qur’an and the life of its great prophet. i would like to ask you whether you have directly read the qur’an of the muslims. have you studied the teachings of the prophet of islam and his humane, ethical doctrines? have you ever received the message of islam from any sources other than the media?

have you ever asked yourself how and on the basis of which values has islam established the greatest scientific and intellectual civilization of the world and raised the most distinguished scientists and intellectuals throughout several centuries?

i would like you not to allow the derogatory and offensive image-buildings to create an emotional gulf between you and the reality, taking away the possibility of an impartial judgment from you. today, the communication media have removed the geog hical borders. hence, don’t allow them to besiege you within fabricated and mental borders.

although no one can individually fill the created gaps, each one of you can construct a bridge of thought and fairness over the gaps to illuminate yourself and your surrounding environment. while this preplanned challenge between islam and you, the youth, is undesirable, it can raise new questions in your curious and inquiring minds. attempts to find answers to these questions will provide you with an appropriate opportunity to discover new truths.

therefore, don’t miss the opportunity to gain proper, correct and unbiased understanding of islam so that hopefully, due to your sense of responsibility toward the truth, future generations would write the history of this current interaction between islam and the west with a clearer conscience and lesser resentment.

to the youth in europe and north america, the recent events in france and similar ones in some other western countries have convinced me to directly talk to you about them. i am addressing you, [the youth], not because i overlook your parents, rather it is because the future of your nations and countries will be in your hands; and also i find that the sense of quest for truth is more vigorous and attentive in your hearts.

i don’t address your politicians and statesmen either in this writing because i believe that they have consciously separated the route of politics from the path of righteousness and truth.

(mary: 19) mary (pbuh) trembled by hearing these sentences and felt deeply worried: she said, “how can i have a boy while no man has touched me and i have not been unchaste? (mary: 20) the messenger of god answered very clearly: this is what your lord wants, and doing it is facile for me. these verses tacitly point to the facts and state: oh mary! you know about my power, as you saw the fruits of paradise beside your worship altar in a season in which no one could have access to them, you heard the angels who testified to your purity, you know that your forefather, adam, was created from clay, so you should not be surprised about this will of god either. he said, “thus [it will be]; your lord says, ‘it is easy for me, and we will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from us. and it is a matter [already] decreed. (mary: 21) so she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place. (mary: 22) and the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. she said, “oh, i wish i had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten. (mary: 23) but he called her from below her, “do not grieve; your lord has provided beneath you a stream. (mary: 24) and look above your head, and see how a dried up stem turns into a fertile palm tree, with branches adorned by its fruit. “and shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.” (mary: 25) “so eat and drink and be contented. and if you see from among humanity anyone, say, ‘indeed, i have vowed to the most merciful abstention, so i will not speak today to [any] man.” (mary: 26) “then she brought him to her people, carrying him.” (mary: 27) when they saw her with the newborn, they were completely surprised. those who had known her as a symbol of piety and dignity be e worried about her and began to suspect and mistrust her. some of them hastily made judgments and reproved her and said: “o sister of aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste.” (mary: 28) they called her “sister of aaron” because aaron was a pure and righteous man and all of the israelites knew him. when people wanted to talk about a person who was immaculate, they said:” he/she is brother/sister of aaron”. at this moment mary kept silent at god’s command and pointed to her son. so she pointed to him. they said, “how can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?” (mary: 29) shortly, the newborn started to talk: [jesus] said, “indeed, i am the servant of allah. he has given me the scripture and made me a prophet (mary: 30) “and he has made me blessed wherever i am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah (almsgiving) as long as i remain alive.” (mary: 31) “and [made me] dutiful to my mother, and he has not made me a wretched tyrant.” (mary: 32) and finally, jesus (pbuh) said: “and peace is on me the day i was born and the day i will die and the day i am raised alive.” (mary: 33) the miracles of jesus (pbuh) “and we gave jesus, the son of mary, clear proofs, and we supported him with the holy spirit.” (surah baqara (the cow):253) based on history, “clear proofs” refers to miracles like: healing incurable sicknesses, revival of the dead and supreme religious knowledge. in this verse reference is made to one of jesus’s (pbuh) miracles: “he will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity and will be of the righteous.” (surah al-e-imran (the family of ‘imran): 46) “and [make him] a messenger to the children of israel, [who will say], ‘indeed i have come to you with a sign from your lord in that i design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then i breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of allah . and i cure the blind and the leper, and i give life to the dead – by permission of allah. and i inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.” (the family of ‘imran: 49) in the 110th verse of the al-ma’idah surah, god reminds us of all the miracles of jesus (pbuh) which have been named in the family of ‘imran: 49, saying that all of these miracles were done by the permission of god, and his revival of the dead and curing of the blind and the leper had been done by his permission. who are the apostles? the apostles of jesus (pbuh) have been mentioned 5 times in the holy quran, 2 of which are in the as-saf surah. this name refers to twelve of the special companions of jesus (pbuh), whose names are available in the current gospels (matthew and luke – chapter 6); this name comes from “hur” in arabic, which means washing and bleaching, and since they had pure hearts and graceful souls and tried to clean the hearts and minds of themselves and others, they’ve been called so (in arabic). some riwayahs tell us that jesus (pbuh) sent each one of them to a different part of the world as his envoy, they were sincere, dedicated and militant persons and loved jesus (pbuh) from the bottom of their hearts.
